SMTA offers training in technology, manufacturing, and process controls when it comes to making good electronic assemblies, but it could train our membership better on securing a proper printed circuit board supply chain.

The PCB makes up 8-12% of the total cost of the bill of material. It is one of, if not the most, expensive components of the assembly and the foundation of your or your customers’ electronic product.

EMS and OEM companies train on just about every process on how to make a successful assembly but not how to get a quality PCBs consistently built in a timely manner at a competitive price. The bare board is usually the last item ordered, but the first thing needed for the assembly process to begin.

In addition, the price is subjective, dictated by order technology, required delivery time, and number of pieces needed.I’ve been advocating for years for such a robust training program on how to buy PCBs properly.

As an SMTA board member, I will work to provide solid training in those areas for our membership especially in these challenging times of tariffs, rising material costs, and domestic capacity issues.
